The Kansas City Chiefs could get some help at the wide receiver position ahead of their Week 9 tilt with the Miami Dolphins in Frankfurt, Germany.
Chiefs HC Andy Reid confirmed on Wednesday that WR Richie James had been designated to return from injured reserve, with his 21-day practice window now opening. He'll participate in practice on Wednesday, and the team will get to see where he's at.
This doesn't necessarily mean that James will be activated before Sunday's game, but the team does have a free space on the 53-man roster that they've yet to fill. James suffered an MCL injury in the team's Week 2 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars and was subsequently placed on injured reserve.
There was a report indicating that the Chiefs would try and trade James while he was on injured reserve, mainly because his role was a bit redundant with the return of Mecole Hardman, but nothing ever materialized there. The decision to bring James back from injured reserve might be to lessen some of Hardman's responsibilities on special teams so Andy Reid can get him more involved on offense.
James had 50 catches for 569 yards and four touchdowns with the New York Giants last season, but he has mostly played special teams in Kansas City to this point. He has three targets on the season with one reception for six yards. He has six punt returns for 24 yards and one fumble lost.
Former Chiefs receiver hints team shouldn’t have traded him
The Kansas City Chiefs caught some shade from a former player after Sunday’s loss to the Denver Broncos.
