The Kansas City Chiefs have made a practice squad elevation ahead of their Week 9 contest against the Miami Dolphins in Frankfurt, Germany.
With RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire ruled out on Thursday and not making the trip to Germany, and RB Jerick McKinnon dealing with a groin injury, the Chiefs needed some reinforcements in the backfield. As we expected, Kansas City's decision-makers opted to elevate RB La'Mical Perine from the practice squad.
Why is this move significant for Kansas City? Perine gets a chance to remind folks of his standout preseason campaign.
A preseason standout gets his chance
I felt that Perine had played his way onto the 53-man roster with his performance during the 2023 NFL preseason. He supplanted rookie RB Deneric Prince for snaps during training camp and the preseason, with pass protection being a big part of the reason why. During the preseason, Perine managed 16 carries for 97 rushing yards, four receptions for 50 yards and one touchdown. He was previously elevated to the 53-man roster in Week 2 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but he was made inactive. Now, he'll actually get a chance to prove that he belongs.
Some extra motivation?
An underrated aspect of this practice squad elevation is the fact that Perine spent the majority of the 2022 NFL season on the practice squad in Miami. He's getting an opportunity to go against his former team and a team he was quite familiar with beforehand as well. When Perine played for the New York Jets he had seven attempts for 27 yards and two receptions on three targets for nine yards against the Dolphins.
