Chiefs rookie CB Nohl Williams is drawing rave reviews from the entire coaching staff in Kansas City for all the right reasons
Kansas City Chiefs rookie CB Nohl Williams is getting some positive reviews after preseason Week 1.
Kansas City Chiefs CB Nohl Williams might be the rookie getting the most positive reviews from the coaching staff following preseason Week 1 against the Arizona Cardinals.
Speaking to reporters after practice on Monday, Chiefs HC Andy Reid made a point to shout out the rookie as he wrapped up his opening statement about the game. In 36 combined defensive and special teams snaps, Williams notched two total tackles, a tackle for loss, and a pass defended.
“(Nohl) Williams jumped out with some big physical plays on special teams and on the defensive side,” Reid said on Monday.
Splash plays aren’t the only thing earning Chiefs rookie CB Nohl Williams praise
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Chiefs DB coach Dave Merritt also pointed to the physicality of Williams, while also praising a few other facets of his game on and off the field.
“He (Nohl Williams) competes,” Merritt said. “He showed some physicality in the game in Arizona. So, those are things that we were looking for, and I just love the fact that the kid, he takes coaching. A lot of guys, sometimes they come in, and you don’t know what you’re getting. It’s like a box of chocolates, you have no clue on what you’re going to get. But he takes coaching, so we love that about him.”
It’s clear that the third-round draft pick out of Cal still has a long way to go, but he’s doing all the right things as the preseason progresses. With Jaylen Watson sidelined by a concussion and Kristian Fulton working his way back from a knee injury, he’ll naturally get more opportunities to play the outside cornerback position.
“He’s still swimming. He’s still Dory. Alright, just keep swimming,” Merritt said of Williams. “Again, I tell these guys, when you’re playing one position, there should be no reason for you not to know what to do. If you’re not a guy who’s going from safety to nickel to dime, if you’re doing multiple positions, I get it. You know, we have a complex defense, but if you’re playing one position, you should never, ever not know what to do. You should know the call before the safety even makes the call. So, hopefully, he’ll continue to ascend in the direction that we want him to go in, but he’s doing well.”
