Matt Nagy gets open and real about his time as head coach for the Bears as he continues to do interviews for his second chance
The Chiefs and Nagy could be moving on from one another.
The Kansas City Chiefs are likely searching for a new offensive coordinator this offseason. It was time for a change, and OC Matt Nagy has had some head coaching interviews. If he doesn’t land a head coaching job, he’d prefer an OC role that allows him to call plays, which is understandable. While KC seeks a new OC, Nagy has reflected on his time as a head coach.
He recognizes where he went wrong, especially after reading a 45-page anonymous evaluation of his head coaching tenure.
Nagy reads anonymous evaluations of his days as an HC with the Chicago Bears
The Tennessee Titans, Baltimore Ravens, and a few other teams have interviewed Nagy for their open HC positions. Many believe this could be Nagy’s “second time is the charm” moment. If so, it’s good that he has looked back at where everything went wrong, identified what happened, taken blame, and knows what needs to be different.
If he does get a second shot, there’s at least a chance things would be a bit different. That’s not to say he will instantly become successful as a head coach; however, you can bet he won’t be doing many of the same things he did with the Bears.
The Bears now have Ben Johnson, the former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator, who led the Bears to a playoff win over the Green Bay Packers last weekend. Many people are going with the young, up-and-coming coordinator as their next head coach. As for KC, they’re moving on from Nagy.
Since Nagy became the Chiefs’ OC in 2023 after being fired by the Bears, the offense has declined each year. In 2022, the Chiefs averaged 29 points per game. In 2023, they averaged 21; in 2024, 22; and this past season, 21.
Before Nagy, KC averaged at least 28 points per game in each Mahomes-era season, including 35 once. Nagy is linked to recent offensive struggles despite personnel factors. Under Bieniemy, the offense was more effective, and some believe KC is waiting for Bears RB coach Bieniemy to lose so they can re-hire him as OC.
What’s next for Nagy? What’s next for the Chiefs’ open OC job? Those questions should soon get answers as both parties move forward into the next chapter of their respective futures.
