Get ready to chop some wood, Kansas City Chiefs fans.

With Matt Nagy seemingly on a collision course for the Tennessee Titans head-coaching job, Kansas City is starting up a coaching search for the offensive coordinator position. The writing was on the wall that Eric Bieniemy was the presumed favorite for the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator job

It wasn’t just Andy Reid’s comments on “knowing some good people” or Patrick Mahomes referencing “accountability” in his media availability that made this potential reunion clear. The fact that the Chiefs hadn’t requested any offensive coordinator interviews up until this point raised some flags, but that’s not it either.

Bieniemy’s reputation in the Chiefs’ organization speaks for itself. He was a damn good offensive coordinator during his previous stint in Kansas City. In the three years since Matt Nagy took over, the offense has become a shadow of what it once was, taking steps back in virtually every way possible. With the team trying to recapture some of the old ways that made them so successful, why not bring back the lieutenant who helped make it happen?

Kansas City Chiefs offense ranks under Eric Bieniemy (2018-2022):

  • Points per game: 30.3 (1st)
  • Yards per game: 404.2 (1st)
  • Yards per play: 6.31 (1st)
  • First Downs per game: 23.8 (1st)
  • Third Down Conversion Percentage: 49.1 (1st)
  • Fourth Down Conversion Percentage: 66.1 (1st)

Bieniemy is known as a disciplinarian and no-nonsense coach, to the extent that he caught some flak for it toward the end of his tenure in Kansas City. He’s viewed by those in the organization as exactly the type of coach who can iron out the issues with penalties, drops, and execution that were so prevalent in the offense throughout the 2025 NFL season.
