The Kansas City Chiefs' offense has played it's best football over the last two games, and the performance of the offensive line is a major reason why.
On a short week as the visiting team, the Chiefs marched into Pittsburgh and beat the Steelers 29-10 on Christmas Day. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes completed 29-38 passes for 320 yards and three touchdowns, connecting with eight different receivers on the day.
It was Mahomes' best game of the season, and it came off the heels of another productive outing he had against the Houston Texans just four days ago. Mahomes is obviously one of the greats, and the return of wide receiver Hollywood Brown has helped, but the improvements made by the five big guys up front have taken Kansas City's offense to the next level.
The Chiefs' offensive line didn't allow a single sack to the Steelers on Wednesday, and allowed just one sack to the Texans back on Saturday. That is a tremendous development for K.C. as Mahomes has been sacked more times this year than any other of his career at 36. Even more encouraging is the fact that both Pittsburgh and Houston have excellent defenses.
Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt ranks fourth in the NFL in sacks with 11.5, but was neutralized for most the day. The Texans rank fourth in total sacks, but their pass rush was basically a non-factor against K.C. It's definitely not a coincidence that the Chiefs have had impressive back-to-back wins at the same time as their offensive line finally putting it all together.
If they can keep up that level of play up front, it's going to be very tough for opposing teams to prevent the Chiefs from becoming the first franchise in NFL history to win three Super Bowls in a row. K.C. will now get some much needed rest as it won't play a meaningful game until the divisional round of the playoffs.
