Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is always locked in.
He is the ultimate competitor, which is why he is a two-time NFL MVP as well as a two-time Super Bowl champion at just 28 years old. However, when it comes to the postseason, Mahomes somehow finds a way to elevate his game to an even higher level. While speaking to reporters on Wednesday, coach Andy Reid had high praise for Mahomes' preparation and overall leadership.
“I’d tell you all the way around his preparation is phenomenal," Reid said about Mahomes' postseason approach. "His attitude is phenomenal; his compete is phenomenal, so you love all of that and we’re lucky to have him here, for the city and for the organization here. He’s a heck of a football player; he’s such a well-rounded good person. He’s great in the locker room, very hard for a guy like that to have the respect of the team and the organization and be able to kind of fall into both areas and be comfortable with both areas without getting labeled whatever, a ’schmooze’ right? He handles both so well, it’s a great characteristic to have for him.”
Reid also commented on Mahomes' mindset for his first career road playoff game in Buffalo against the Bills.
“I haven’t talked to him about that, so it might be, might not," Reid said. "I know he’s looking forward to playing, he gets fired up for every game. That’s a great venue up there, you can’t get fired up for that, hard to get fired up, right? He’s always ready and excited, but I don’t know if he’s heard all that, I don’t think he listens to much of that.”
If you think that Reid is just saying nice things about his quarterback for the media, think again. Mahomes' former teammate and former NFL offensive lineman Kyle Long talked about what Mahomes is like during playoff time on Kevin Clark's "This Is Football" podcast.
Mindsets and work ethics like the ones Mahomes possess are what separate good players from all-time greats. He has a lot of natural gifts, but his attention to detail and commitment to his craft are what consistently keep him playing at an elite level. If the Chiefs lose to the Bills on Sunday, it certainly won't be because of a lack of preparation on Mahomes' end.
