One of the most fun celebrations of Patrick Mahomes' career came against the Chicago Bears when the Kansas City Chiefs dominated them in a 26-3 win in 2019.
The Super Bowl-winning quarterback, who will be playing for a second ring on Sunday, pulled off a finger count to ten after scoring a touchdown in that game. Why?
The celebration represented the 10th pick of the 2017 NFL Draft, the pick with which the Chiefs selected Mahomes in a franchise-altering transaction. He was just having some fun.
But more importantly, Mahomes was pointing out the teams that had passed on him, including the Bears, who had selected Mitch Trubisky with the #2 pick. We won't call that one a franchise-altering decision, though.
Well, it turns out there's a little bit more to that story. Earlier this year, Patrick's father claimed the current Chiefs QB expected to play for the Bears during an interview with 670 The Score. Mahomes categorizes that as a slight exaggeration.
However, he essentially revealed he was basically lied to by the Bears during his Draft process.
"My dad took it a little far," said the Chiefs quarterback on Tuesday. "It wasn't that I thought the Bears were going to draft me but I was told that if they drafted a quarterback, I would be the quarterback that they drafted."
"But they told me that they weren't drafting a quarterback so that was the most surprising thing," added the Chiefs quarterback.
Whatever the exact reality was, the Bears front office won't forget the mistake they made any time soon. As for Mahomes, he couldn't have asked for a better outcome.
While he could've still had a great, championship-filled career elsewhere, the pairing with Andy Reid will likely put him with the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history when it's all said and done.
For now, though, it's all about beating the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII a handful of days from now.
