Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is known for getting his ball to his target by any means necessary.
No-look passes, underhand tosses, left-handed passes, submarine sidearm throws — Mahomes has done them all in NFL games to great success. There is one pass, however, that we haven't seen him unleash during an NFL game quite yet.
Over the past several seasons, Mahomes has been working on a behind-the-back pass during training camp. You'll see him throw some during pre-practice warm-ups or after the day of practice has ended when the quarterbacks put on a show for the fans and try to hit trash cans or the goalposts.
This year at training camp, Mahomes has taken the behind-the-back pass to another level.
During Saturday's 10-10-10 practice session, Mahomes worked a behind-the-back pass into 11-on-11 team drills. It was on a wide receiver screen to Mahomes' blindside. Mahomes ran to the right, looked back, and flipped the pass behind his back to Skyy Moore. The second-year wide receiver secured the pass and ran for a positive gain.
Now, it's worth noting that during this particular style of practice, the defense is going at half speed. It's essentially a more vigorous walkthrough.
Still, this is an escalation for Mahomes to try the behind-the-back pass in this particular setting. Mahomes has consistently maintained that if an in-game situation calls for it, he'll do it during a game. Practicing it here only reinforces that fact and indicates that it's simply a matter of time before it actually happens on a Monday, Thursday, or Sunday.
Chiefs WR Skyy Moore is ‘an entirely new player’
