College football is back, and everybody was watching when Deion Sanders shocked the nation with his impressive debut as the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes.
The Buffs defeated No. 17 TCU in a 45-42 shootout after entering the game as 20.5-point underdogs. The game featured an incredible 38-of-47 for 510 passing yards (school record), four touchdowns, and no interceptions from QB Shedeur Sanders. It also featured a dynamic performance from two-way player Travis Hunter, who played 110 combined snaps of offense and defense. He had 11 receptions for 119 yards and an interception in the game.
Even Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes took to the app formerly known as Twitter to give Coach Prime his flowers for what he's accomplished in such a short time at CU.
"Crazy to see what Deion (Sanders) and Colorado has done already," Mahomes wrote.
TCU became the first team to lose their season opener to an unranked opponent after playing in the National Championship game the year prior since the 2020 LSU Tigers. Everyone expected Colorado to look outmatched in this one because they were a 1-11 team last season going up against a team that played on the biggest stage in college football a season ago, but it didn't happen that way. Sanders' band of HBCU and FCS transfers rallied together to do something incredible.
It's as if Sanders has changed the culture and the fortunes of the Buffaloes overnight, which is exactly why Mahomes is so incredibly impressed. There are big things ahead for Sanders and his Buffaloes squad, with this massive upset only being the beginning of their success.
