Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is trying to be the best teammate he possibly can be in a tough situation.

Chris Jones remains absent from training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri amidst a contract dispute with the team. The former second-round draft pick is in the final year of a four-year contract worth $85 million, his second contract with the team. Rightfully, the team's 2022 sack leader is looking to see his deal extended prior to the start of the 2023 NFL season.

Mahomes obviously wants to see Jones rejoin the team during training camp, but just how much does he get involved with that situation? The answer is not much.

“Yeah, I mean I talk to Chris (Jones), not necessarily about contract stuff," Mahomes told reporters on Wednesday. "That’s how I am about all things, I never talk about the contracts, I just talk about football, and how he’s doing."

Mahomes is maintaining a level of contact, just to check in on his friend and teammate. He's leaving all of the business up to those who make the decisions in the front office in Kansas City.

But what has he learned in those casual conversations with Jones? Well, that information should give fans some assurance for when the All-Pro does return to the practice field.

"I mean he’s working out; he’s staying in shape," Mahomes continued. "All of that will handle itself, and all I can do is just be supportive, be a teammate. I mean, that’s one of the guys that’s been a staple to this organization for a long time."

The veteran quarterback knows just how important Jones is to the success of this franchise. He's even left some money on the table so that the team could successfully build a championship-caliber team surrounding him.

As for the question that everyone wants to know: When exactly might Jones rejoin the Chiefs and his teammates?

Mahomes remains hopeful that the day is drawing near.

"Hopefully, we get him back in camp as soon as possible,” Mahomes concluded.
