Kansas City Chiefs Patrick Mahomes

When it's time to play in the regular season, we will surely see more Mahomes magic from the Kansas City Chiefs. This past weekend against the Arizona Cardinals, we were kind of robbed of another crazy moment where Patrick Mahomes makes a play only he can make. Of course, when I say robbed, that isn't me blaming it on Marquez Valdes-Scantling, because I don't think anyone knew he was going to do what Mahomes did.

Mahomes, who was pressured in the pocket by the Cardinals' defensive line, rolled to the right, surveyed the field, got closer to the sideline, and stepped right before the out-of-bounds line before jumping off his one foot to throw the ball across his body to MVS, who then dropped the ball. As we said, MVS was not ready, and I don't think anyone was.

Then again, it wasn't considered a dropped, as it barely hit one of MVS' hands. Either way, we would have loved to see that. Mahomes trying to make something out of nothing has almost become his trademark. He likes to call it, giving his team a chance.

"I was either going to throw it away or kind of give a receiver a chance," Mahomes told reporters after. "I tried to give (Chiefs Wide Receiver) Marquez (Valdes-Scantling) a chance. I don't know if he knew I was going to still throw it since I was so close to the sideline, but it does good work. Being able to scramble around and work that scramble drill, I thought we did a good job of that on a couple of occasions today. So you get into a preseason game, and you get good work in. I thought we did a good job today."

There is only one thing wrong with the play: Mahomes was way too close to getting hit or even rolling an ankle, something of that nature. You never really want your quarterback to come off the ground, especially when he recently had a severe ankle injury.

The coaching staff definitely didn't want him making that play, either.

"Yeah, (Chiefs Offensive Coordinator) Matt Nagy was yelling at him to get out of bounds. Don't take a hit," Reid said after the game.

Mahomes, who had a very similar play last year against the Denver Broncos, as he flicked the ball to Jerick McKinnon as he fell out of bounds, wasn't trying to hear any of that.

"He told me after the fact that I should've run out of bounds, but I was like, 'I wasn't going to get hit,' so as long as I'm not taking any hits, then I can try some stuff out," Mahomes continued. "You see, other quarterbacks try some stuff out too, and so I thought everybody did a good job today, and we definitely had better urgency out there."

Mahomes makes a point – if there was ever a time to try some things out, I think the preseason against the Arizona Cardinals is much better than Week 1 against the Detroit Lions.

You love that Mahomes is so competitive that he just wants to make whatever play he can to win the game, even in the preseason. However, the coaches have a point too, and they were right to give him an earful. Mahomes could have gotten hurt; this time, Chad Henne won't be there to save the day.
