The Kansas City Chiefs started Phase I of their offseason workout plan on Monday, which meant it was the first official day of Patrick Mahomes' Ankle Watch.
And sure enough, reporters were given detailed updates on what is arguably the world's most famous ankle.
"I think now it's been more about just kind of managing it and getting the mobility back as best as I possibly can," Mahomes told reporters Monday. "I wouldn't say I'm 100%, but I've had no necessary limitations… I think we've done a great job of pushing it to the right limit to where now I'm throwing and stuff like that and have no limitations there.
"So, I think there'll be a little bit of limitations with running and cutting the next few weeks, but I'm happy with where I'm at. We'll keep pushing it and getting me to the right spot for the beginning of the season."
Fortunately, the recovery from the ankle injury is not as arduous of a task like Mahomes' recovery from the foot surgery he had in 2021. Anything that deals with surgery will naturally be more complicated, but it was also more of a long-term issue for Mahomes.
"I mean, the foot was having surgery and having that cast on it [and it] just really cut my mobility down a lot," said Mahomes. "And so I had to really work through that into the season that next year. With the ankle, I feel like we've improved, especially these last few weeks of time, as far as the swelling went down, finally. And I don't have that soreness just as much as I was having it after a few days of work."
All of this has Mahomes hopeful his ankle will pretty much be a non-issue by training camp, which is the best situation the Chiefs could ask for.
"With the improvements that we're making these last few weeks, I have a great feeling that by the time we get the training camp, it won't even be any question, at all," said Mahomes.
It's wild to think that Mahomes' injury is going to cost him one series of football and the Chiefs still scored a touchdown on that drive. And he played subsequently sealed the Chiefs' Super Bowl run while dealing with an injury that typically costs players 4-6 weeks of game action.
But, that's how the best become the best – they defy reality.
