The Kansas City Chiefs have a new all-time passing touchdown leader in star QB Patrick Mahomes, but the play that lifted him to the record is also a reminder of the team's biggest shortcoming.

With a six-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter of their Week 13 game against the Raiders, Mahomes has 238 career passing touchdowns. That number surpassed Len Dawson (237) for the most passing touchdowns in Chiefs franchise history. It's a massive achievement for Mahomes in just his seventh season as a starter in Kansas City. However, the play also shows exactly why the team went out and picked up free agent LT D.J. Humphries last week

On third-and-4, Mahomes dropped back to pass out of the shotgun. Not even 2.5 seconds into the play, starting left tackle Wanya Morris was beaten cleanly, allowing pressure and a hit on Mahomes as he released the ball. Mahomes floated the ball to WR Justin Watson for the touchdown as he was hit, but it was hardly the ideal situation.

Check out the play below:

Heading into the team's Week 13 game against the Raiders, Mahomes ranked sixth in the league with 39 QB hits. At the onset of the third quarter against Las Vegas, Mahomes had been sacked 30 times in 2024, the most in a single season in his entire NFL career. This has become a massive problem for Kansas City and one they must solve moving forward if the offense is to hit its stride heading into the playoffs.

To the credit of Morris, he's been playing through a knee injury this season. He's been the team's best option at left tackle, but the team needs to find a solution. They're hopeful Humphries can be that guy as early as Week 14 against the Los Angeles Chargers.
