The Kansas City Chiefs did not play well regarding their starter's one and-only drive against the New Orleans Saints. The offense could have been better, even though it was pretty vanilla, but the defense was very bad.
They looked slow when they came out, and that can happen sometimes. While Chiefs' Twitter was up in a blaze for the most part, it is just preseason Week 1, and the Chiefs, as they always do, will be fine and figure everything out.
When the backups came out, though, or really the third and fourth string guys, it was a different story, as they actually started to come back from being down 17-0.
"You know, coming out of that second half, the message was energy," Shane Buchele told the media. "We needed to have better energy on the sideline and on the field, and we were able to put together a couple of drives where we were able to score, and it was kind of cool. It's always fun having those guys pumped up and having energy on the sideline. So that, that was the message going out in the second half."
Buechele said that was the message Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid were preaching at halftime. And Mahomes is always about his energy, whether he is in the game or not. His message is always energy.
Mahomes brought the energy, as you could see after Buechele threw an amazing touchdown pass. Once the camera turned to Mahomes on the sideline, all you could see was him jumping up and down, screaming as if he was the one who just threw the very Mahomes-like pass.
As you can tell from that sequence, Mahomes feels like the preseason is more than important.
"I think it's important because we're going to have that target on our back all year," Mahomes said, according to Sam McDowell of the KC Star. "Everybody's going to play their best football against us. If they haven't the last few years, I want these guys to understand that. If we're not playing our best football from the get-go, we can get in those deficits. I know it's a mixture of the 1s and 2s today, but when you get down 14-0, it's hard to win in this league."
That sure is a humble thing to say for the king of comebacks. The guy has an above .500 win percentage when trailing by ten at any point of the game. But he is right.
You could see that with the New Orleans Saints first offensive drive. They wanted to prove something. They wanted to go out and do it against the defending champions and possibly the dynasty of the 2020s. And, respect for the Saints because they did just that.
The Chiefs, however, can't get complacent in the regular season. Mahomes' message is perfect; you hope some young guys hear it.
Chiefs’ sideline had perfect reaction to fourth quarter turnover
Even the Kansas City Chiefs’ sideline was facepalming when fourth-string QB Chris Oladokun threw an interception with a minute to go in the fourth quarter.
