Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will need to break an active 21-year streak for his team to win Super Bowl LVII against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night.
On Thursday night, Mahomes was named the NFL MVP for the second time in his career.
That's certainly exciting news for Mahomes and the Chiefs — winning multiple NFL MVP Awards essentially stamped Mahomes' ticket to the Hall of Fame (which is insane to say considering he's only 27 years old, but it's true).
But the good news comes with a caveat.
Mahomes now has to try to become the first reigning NFL MVP to win the Super Bowl since Kurt Warner in 1999/2000.
The last nine players to win the MVP and play in the Super Bowl have lost the big game. The most recent being Tom Brady in 2017/18.
Oddly enough, prior to 2001, NFL MVPs winning the Super Bowl was briefly the norm.
From 1989 to 1999, six reigning NFL MVP winners won the Super Bowl.
- Joe Montana (San Francisco 49ers 1989)
- Emmitt Smith (Dallas Cowboys 1993)
- Steve Young (San Francisco 49ers 1994)
- Brett Favre (Green Bay Packers 1996)
- Terrell Davis (Denver Broncos 1998)
- Kurt Warner (St Louis Rams 1999)
Mahomes will look to break the streak on Sunday, but it won't be easy against an Eagles team that was one of the top franchises in the NFL all season long.
