Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes and TE Travis Kelce are at the center of the NFL's all-new brand campaign kicking off the 2023 NFL season.
"You Can’t Make This Stuff Up" follows the director of the 104th season of the NFL, comedian Keegan Michael-Key, as he leads the table read for the script of the 2023 NFL season.
Mahomes and Kelce are joined by NFL stars such as Bengals WR Ja'Marr Chase, Eagles C Jason Kelce, Bears QB Justin Fields, Dolphins CB Jalen Ramsey, Vikings QB Kirk Cousins, and Giants DT Dexter Lawrence. Travis and Jason's mom, Donna Kelce, even makes a special guest appearance.
The first video gets the table-read started, with the NFL's top stars turning against Mahomes after a staffer suggests writing him out of the script. Kelce seemed amused, but Mahomes didn't take too kindly to the suggestion.
The second video has some juicy and spicy midseason suggestions, but Michael-Key has everyone skip to the last page after the suggestions get a little convoluted. The reaction shows that there is something exciting in store.
“Our goal was to make this campaign tongue-in-cheek, humorous and clever in the way we tapped into popular memes and cultural conversations about the league and its incredible real-life storylines that are better than anything you could make up," said NFL CMO Tim Ellis, via press release. “We really wanted to have fun with this and not take ourselves too seriously. We hope fans get a kick out of the campaign and are sitting on the edge of their seats to see what spectacles unfold this season."
It's good to see the league having a sense of humor about the "scripted" meme all while creating a marketing campaign that showcases the NFL as the biggest stage for the most exciting and organic stories in sports.
