The Kansas City Chiefs are Super Bowl champions again. For the second time in four years, they get to lift up the Lombardi Trophy and solidify their status as a true dynasty in NFL history.
And it was a very special season to do it in, too. When it comes to chasing all-time greatness like Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs are, there has to be an ability to adapt to new supporting casts, and new schemes over a long period of time.
If Mahomes' career is going to end with people arguing for him to be the greatest of all time, he needs to match the longevity of careers like Tom Brady's and Peyton Manning's. Brady won with very different versions of the Patriots. Manning made four Super Bowls with four different head coaches.
In that way, Mahomes proved something special this season. After counting on Tyreek Hill's game-changing speed for the first four seasons of his career as a starter, he didn't bat an eye without him.
The Chiefs asked him to take on an expanded role in teaching the offense to the young receivers joining the team like JuJu Smith-Schuster. Every step of the way, Mahomes delivered.
And to be fair, he didn't do it alone. Week in and week out, Travis Kelce stepped up. No matter the double-coverages, no matter the situations. He got open and dealt damage.
And speaking of Kelce and Hill, the former Chiefs wide receiver took to Twitter to admit what fans have been pounding the table for a long time: He called Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce the greatest duo of all time.
"Boy 15 and 87 has to be the greatest duo of all time !! Love watching it" – HILL VIA TWITTER (@CHEETAH)
It's great to see Hill – who has gotten under the skin of Chiefs fans since his departure by saying stuff like his infamous comments about Tua Tagovailoa's accuracy is better than Mahomes – shout out his former teammates like that.
Kelce and Mahomes have now combined for 14 postseason touchdowns, the second most by any duo in NFL history. They trail only Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski (15).
And while those lists will always get our attention, it's only fair to say no one has quite done it as Mahomes and Kelce have. Their style of play is electric and both are at the top of the sport as of today.
They'll each have a shot at all-time discussions by the time their careers are over.
