Update: Multiple sources tell A to Z Sports that Chiefs CB Nazeeh Johnson's knee is "good." One source indicated that Johnson simply "landed funny" on the knee after a play during practice and wanted to get it checked out for precautionary reasons. No word on WR Justin Watson yet.
The injury bug caught up with the Kansas City Chiefs on Day 4 of training camp, which is the last day before a day off and ahead of the team's first padded practice.
The wide receiver room was the first group to suffer an injury in practice. Third-year veteran WR Justin Watson made a sliding grab during 7-on-7 team drills during practice. Watson made his way over to the medical tent on the sidelines without help, but with a noticeable limp. There he had his lower left leg examined and spoke with staff members for several minutes before he loaded himself to the front of a cart and was taken up the hill to the facilities at Missouri Western State University to get further examinations. The team is calling the injury a foot injury.
The good news is that Watson rode in the front of the cart and appeared in good spirits. Typically, that's a sign of something minor compared to more serious injuries. Unfortunately, the next injury is much more concerning for Kansas City.
Later in practice Chiefs CB Nazeeh Johnson left the practice field and was spotted in the medical tent. There's no word on when the injury occurred, but local beat reporters indicated that the training staff was working on his right knee. Johnson, of course, suffered a torn right ACL in camp last year while working in the indoor practice facility on a day when practice got rained out.
The third-year cornerback was eventually carted up the hill at Missouri Western State, also in the front of the cart like Watson. This was closer to the end of practice, so he might have just been given the rest of the day off after experiencing discomfort in his surgically repaired knee, but this one still warrants watching from the Chiefs Kingdom. The team confirmed it is a knee injury for Johnson.
Johnson was tracking to start opposite Trent McDuffie and L'Jarius Sneed last season. On Wednesday, he was getting work opposite McDuffie and Chamarri Conner in the team's nickel defense. He was cleared to return to practice at the end of OTAs.
Injuries are a big part of NFL training camps, and the Chiefs have more than enough depth to account for some early injuries, even with several players on injury lists to start camp. Hopefully, neither injury turns out serious and the two players don't end up missing a significant amount of time.
