The Kansas City Chiefs are going into the 2023 season with a ton of pressure on their shoulders. This is a team that needs to defend its Super Bowl title, especially if they would finally like to be in that conversation as a dynasty.
Their roster is very similar to last year's, although they have made some additions and subtractions. They have lost some good players and replaced most of them with guys that are about the same or even better.
For the positions and guys that they didn't replace, like a wide receiver and right tackle, they will likely do so in the draft. But for now, they are still considered the best team in football, and I'm not the only one with that opinion. One Pro Football Focus power rankings list has the Chiefs at number one.
Here is what they said about their number-one pick in the pre-draft power rankings:
Biggest loss (PFF WAR): S Juan Thornhill, WR JuJu Smith-Schuster
Biggest gain (PFF WAR): ED Charles Omenihu
The Chiefs released Frank Clark and lost both starting offensive tackles Orlando Brown Jr. and Andrew Wylie. However, their signings of tackle Jawaan Taylor and ED Charles Omenihu mitigate those losses. Taylor has become one of the better pass protectors on the right side across the NFL, ranking top-15 in pass-blocking grade (76.7) and pressure rate allowed (5.2%) among tackles on true pass sets in 2022.
The Chiefs always nail the draft, for the most part – well, at least they have the last few years. Last year they had five or six rookies may big plays in the playoffs and play significant snaps in big games all year long.
And of course, the seventh-round pick Isiah Pacheco, the starting running back. If you need proof that the Chiefs will get the draft right, look no further than their young secondary, young linebacker core, Pacheco, and even George Karlaftis.
They have three main positions they are targeting in this draft defensive lineman – edge or interior, wide receiver, and offensive tackle. With the 12 or so draft picks they have, you can't tell me that they won't get the draft right, and stay at that one spot in most power rankings from here on out.
