The Kansas City Chiefs oversaw plenty of individual improvements throughout the course of the 2022 season. That being said, Pro Football Focus highlighted one Chiefs player who underwent the most improvement according to their grading scale.
Safety Justin Reid struggled during the back half of his tenure with the Houston Texans. He displayed plenty of promise early on in his career and by signing with the Chiefs last offseason, there was a hope that he could return to his old form.
Reid did exactly that in 2022. He played in all 17 games during the regular season, finishing fourth on the team with 83 tackles. Reid added seven passes defensed, two tackles for loss and one sack as well.
PFF’s excerpt on Reid reads as follows:
"After an impressive first two seasons in the league with the Houston Texans, Reid struggled in 2020 and 2021 before joining the Chiefs this past offseason. Playing 1,311 snaps in the regular season and playoffs for the eventual Super Bowl winner, Reid registered a career-high 27 tackles resulting in a defensive stop."
His PFF grade jumped from a 50.9 mark in 2021 all the way up to 70.3 in 2022. His versatility on the backend is a luxury that few teams have. It’s clear that defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo put Reid in a position to succeed by catering to his strengths.
Reid, 26, has two years left on his deal with Kansas City. He has the potential to take another major stride in 2023 and assert himself as one of the NFL’s top free safeties.
