Chiefs’ problems on offense get worse as offensive line takes a big hit they can hardly afford in Week 12 tilt against the Colts
The Kansas City Chiefs are playing the Week 12 game against the Indianapolis Colts on hard mode after their latest injury.
Things already look hard for the Kansas City Chiefs’ offense against the Indianapolis Colts’ defense in Week 12, and they just got that much harder.
The Chiefs announced that they’ve ruled out starting RG Trey Smith with an ankle injury shortly after the beginning of the third quarter. Smith got up slowly at the end of a play in the second half after being rolled up on from behind while he was making a block.
He tried to stay in the game, but the sideline noticed he was hobbled and sent in Mike Caliendo for the remainder of the series. Smith limped off the field and was tended to by the training staff, who re-taped his right ankle.
Smith missed the remainder of that series, but after some quick pass sets on the sideline to test his ankle, he came back into the game for the end of the second half. It appears the team reevaluated the injury at halftime and opted to make a change after the break.
Chiefs RG Trey Smith replaced by Mike Caliendo at halftime
Caliendo was in at right guard to start the second half, with no signs of Smith on the sidelines or otherwise. Smith was ruled out shortly after the Chiefs’ first series. Caliendo is the Chiefs’ top backup interior offensive lineman, so it’s no surprise to see him in the game for Kansas City.
He, of course, filled in at left guard last season when the team moved Joe Thuney to left tackle late in the year. The Chiefs actually have Hunter Nourzad available as well if they were to suffer another interior O-Line injury. Remember that Kingsley Suamataia is also coming off a concussion.
No matter the outcome of this Week 12 game, the Chiefs now have some concerns with an extremely short week ahead of their Thanksgiving game against the Dallas Cowboys.
Chiefs’ Interior Offensive Line Depth
- 53-man roster: Mike Caliendo
- 53-man roster: Hunter Nourzad
- Practice squad: C.J. Hanson
