The Kansas City Chiefs have been doubted the last few years in one particular area, and even this year a bit too. The Chiefs have never been the most dominant defensive team. That is, at least not in the Patrick Mahomes era.
This year, their defense is so much better than anyone would have expected. The defense is making winning plays and has even won the Chiefs a few games this year. For example, the 99-yard pick-six against the Chargers.
Well, a lot of people still don't think the Chiefs have a good defense. On Sunday against the Buffalo Bills, a team that many think is the best in the league, the Chiefs used their defense in the first half to not only save themselves but further prove they are a good defense.
Yes, the Chiefs do have a fumble recovery in the first half, but that honestly had nothing to do with the defense. The situations I'm talking about are the next two offensive possessions for the Bills.
The next one, Buffalo was able to drive the ball downfield, but the Chiefs ended up locking down and forcing the Bills to kick a field goal. On the very next offensive possession, the Chiefs made the biggest play of the first half on that side of the ball.
The Bills drove the ball into the red zone, and unfortunately for them, came away with a turnover on downs instead of a touchdown or a field goal. That score could have swung the game in a different direction based on how well the Bills' offense has played. Instead, the Chiefs' pass rush forced Josh Allen to throw a pass that was batted down in the end-zone, letting the Chiefs off of the hook.
The next offensive possession for Buffalo was the Chiefs' best defensive possession of the first half. They were able to force a punt and give the Chiefs' offense the ball with three minutes left in the first half while still having the lead.
While the offense couldn't do anything with the ball, the special teams made some great plays to make sure the Bills couldn't either right before the break. The defense helped on that as well with a pressure on Allen to force an incompletion, and a tackle for loss on Allen by Nick Bolton to force a 3rd and 13.
The Bills were still able to score, but the defense is showing they can make things hard for the Bills. But, the Chiefs were able to get a field goal with a second left from 62-yards, tying the game 10-10 at the half.
What makes that even better, is the Chiefs get the ball back to start the second half.
