Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes can reach an extremely impressive milestone in 2022.
If Mahomes throws for 46 touchdown passes in 2022, he'll pass Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino — a Miami Dolphins legend — for the most passing touchdowns in a player's first six seasons.
That's obviously an impressive feat — Marino is one of the best quarterbacks to ever play in the NFL.
But what makes it even more impressive is that Mahomes only played one game as a rookie in 2017 (and he didn't throw a touchdown in that game).
If Mahomes plays in all 17 games in 2022 and breaks Marino's record, it will mean that it took Mahomes only 80 games (and 80 starts) to do it.
Marino, on the other hand, played 87 games (85 starts) in his first six seasons in the NFL.
Now, obviously, the NFL has changed a lot since Marino's early days. It's more of a passing league now (thanks to new offenses and the rules that defensive backs have to follow). But it would still be an incredibly impressive accomplishment by Mahomes.
And the fact that Mahomes could do it seven fewer games than Marino helps equal out the playing style in the different eras. Mahomes is without a doubt on a Hall of Fame track.
