After losing to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs are officially eliminated from the playoffs. We knew that was a possibility. However, we didn’t know that Week 15 could be the last time we ever saw quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce play football together.

We all know Kelce is contemplating retirement. On Sunday, Mahomes injured his knee, in what looked to be one of the worst injuries he’s ever had. Being eliminated, Mahomes will likely be done for the year, which means the two could have completed their last pass together right there in the fourth quarter.

We all knew this day would come. Mahomes had been preparing for this for some time.

Mahomes knows what’s coming, just doesn’t know when

“Every season I have had with him [tight end Travis Kelce] I try to cherish because you never know,” Mahomes said a few weeks ago. “He got himself in great shape this year and has played great football.

“He will have the option to do whatever he wants to do after this season. But I know one thing, he will give everything he has the rest of the season to try and give us a chance to make a playoff run.”

This is the greatest duo of all time. The two are responsible for 760 catches, 8,993 receiving yards, and 61 receiving touchdowns in 124 games together. In most of the duo stats, they rank at the top, and the only other duo that comes close is Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski of the New England Patriots.

If Kelce retires, he will almost immediately be a guy in the Ring of Honor. He’s the best tight end in the history of the league and has three Super Bowl rings. Thinking that we may have seen the last of a connection so good that the two just freelanced or freestyled most of the time is pretty sad.

But, as the old saying goes, eventually, all good things must come to an end.
