The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback is having to adjust to something he hasn't had to his entire NFL career as a starter.
The Chiefs recently found themselves losing their offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy to the Washington Commanders in hopes of having a better opportunity to eventually land a job as a head coach. It seems that after several very successful seasons in Kansas City, it was just never going to happen for him because he was under Andy Reid.
So, that left the Chiefs on the search to find a new offensive coordinator, and it didn't take very long. They promoted Matt Nagy, who was the offensive coordinator in 2017 when Mahomes was a rookie, and the quarterbacks' coach last season after Mike Kafka left for New York.
For the first time in Mahomes' NFL career as a starting quarterback, he will be heading into the next season with a different offensive coordinator not named Bieniemy. Last Thursday during media availability at OTAs, he let the media know how he was adjusting.
“It’s been easy, I think for me, just because I was here when he was the OC the first time," Mahomes told the media. "Obviously, (former Chiefs Offensive Coordinator Eric Bieniemy) EB will be missed. I mean the way he was able to take us and lead us to be the offense that we’ve had these last few years, so he’ll definitely be missed but I’m glad it’s someone that I’m comfortable with, someone that I’ve worked with before.
"I think the guys are starting to learn on how he wants things done. Even though (it’s) the same system, it’s obviously a little bit different on the guy and the coach and stuff like that. It’s been a smooth transition so far and now it’s about kind of continuing to build and build until the season.”
Nagy was there when Mahomes was a rookie, but that didn't really matter, as seeing that he really only played one game in 2017. After that season, Nagy was given the opportunity to become the head coach of the Chicago Bears, where he would take them to the playoffs one time and be fired in 2021.
He wasn't a bad offensive coordinator, but Mahomes never worked with him as close as he will have to in 2023. Mahomes and EB had a great relationship, which is just another reason the offense always worked so well.
He and Nagy will need to get to that level if they want to be successful in 2023. So far, it sounds like everything is going well.
