Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes shares what he hones in on during bye week to be prepared for rest of the season

Whether it's gathering his teammates for offseason training, watching film at his house on his own time, or simply turning up the intensity during practice and meetings, Mahomes does everything he can to prepare himself mentally and physically for games.
The Chiefs just came off of their bye week, and you can bet that Mahomes spent a good portion of it bettering himself for the rest of the season. He was asked by media members on Wednesday what he honed in on during the break, and he first talked about working on his fundamentals.
"I got some work in, and I feel like I'm in a good spot." Mahomes said. "But, I mean, till you take time off, you stay on top of your your fundamentals, you stay on top of the stuff that's gotten you to where you are so far in the season. But, I thought it was a good bye week. I've spent some time with some with my family, and some friends as well. And so, did that, and then got some work in fundamentally. And I'm excited for a great challenge ahead."
Mahomes then discussed the challenges of having an early bye week and how he plans to approach the rest of the season.
"You got to take it one game at a time, one day at a time." Mahomes said. I haven't been in this situation before, just because I've always had a later bye week, but I always try to stay on top of my body and making sure I'm healthy as possible. I mean, you're going to be banged up in the NFL, but you have to continue to just grind away every single day and get better, and then once you get to the playoffs, that's when you want to be playing your best football. And I think that's something that coach Reid does a great job of. How he schedules practices, how he schedules the week to get your body best prepared for the the entire season."
Mahomes went on to detail how he trains during the bye week and throughout the whole year.
"Stay on top of the little things," Mahomes said. "Shoulder health, knee health, ankle health, all that different type of stuff, especially when you get a little bit extra time in the bye week. And then, I try to do whatever I can to maintain my weight in the right spot. And then, I even get with my QB coach and get some work in as well. And that bye week, just get a little extra time to focus on your fundamentals even more. And so, doing that, and then coming back in the building and continue to stay on top of that would be important to me this year."
The rest of the road is going to be a long one for the Chiefs, with 12 regular season games left and then (presumably) the postseason. It would be huge for them to secure the No. 1 seed in the AFC and get the crucial bye week that comes with it. They're off to a great start as the only undefeated team left in the conference at 5-0.
As for Mahomes, he has generally done a very good job at staying healthy. His ability to maneuver around the pocket is second to none and he always has just enough speed to break off big runs when needed. His 6-foot-2, 225 pound frame can absorb a lot of hits thanks to the way he trains.
Hopefully Mahomes' offensive line can keep him upright and he establishes a deeper chemistry with his wide receivers as the Chiefs look to kick their offense into another gear as we approach the second half of the season.
