The Kansas City Chiefs’ 2025 season is over, and frankly, it was over as soon as Patrick Mahomes tore his ACL and LCL. However, the Chiefs and every other team cannot begin making moves to improve their teams yet. However, Mahomes is helping his alma mater, Texas Tech, make some moves. The Red Raiders landed transfer portal quarterback Brendan Sorsby, one of the biggest moves of the CFP offseason.

Mahomes did help, and he didn’t even really have to do anything.

“He just called me and Patrick Mahomes to tell us he’s coming to win a natty,” big-time Texas Tech booster Cody Campbell told Pete Nakos of On3.

Mahomes’ presence and name as a Texas Tech alum likely helped seal the deal

Sorsby is one of the best, if not the best, quarterbacks in the portal. QBs want to be like Mahomes these days, there’s no doubt about that. Many college QBs are huge fans of Mahomes. So, why not go to a school where Mahomes is heavily involved? That’s got to be part of the thought process for Sorsby, thinking that developing a relationship with maybe the greatest quarterback of all time can help him in his growth and development.

That’s not to say they will train together or anything like that. However, having Mahomes in your ear a bit is certainly more of an advantage than having other quarterbacks in your ear. Mahomes is so involved with Texas Tech that he has his own uniforms, yet he doesn’t even attend school there anymore. Tech and Adidas gave Mahomes the freedom to put his official logo on two Tech uniforms. That’s something that sells itself, too.

Mahomes isn’t even doing anything, and there’s not much he can do being an NFL QB who’s currently rehabbing an injury. However, he’s a role model, and he loves his Red Raiders.

As for the biggest proponent of the offseason move, Campbell has oil money, and we all know that kind of money can buy you pretty much whatever you want. It’s safe to say that Sorsby has to be getting a pretty chunk of change. Nakos is reporting it’s around $5 million.
