You might see reports swirling that Kansas City Chiefs WR Rashee Rice had charges against him dropped in an alleged assault of a photographer at a Dallas area nightclub on Cinco de Mayo.
That isn't entirely accurate, but let's talk about it.
Appearing on "The Insiders" on NFL Network, league insider Tom Pelissero revealed the latest details on that incident.
"There was also a recent accusation by a photographer about him assaulting the photographer on his way out of the club," Pelissero began. "I can actually tell you the photographer recently dropped those charges. He gave an affidavit to the Dallas police department saying it was a misunderstanding and wants the charges dropped."
Pelissero likely had a Freudian slip in the reporting here or was sharing the information in an easily digestible format that people would best understand. There weren't any "charges" in this incident to drop. Rice had been suspected based on the allegations made by the photographer, but the state of Texas had not yet filed any charges against Rice related to this alleged incident.
The photographer submitting an affidavit to the Dallas police department citing a "misunderstanding" and asking for no charges is the important news that fans should be taking away here. What that affidavit actually says and whether it retracts allegations of assault are important distinctions and ones we don't yet know.
When that affidavit comes across the desk of a state attorney, it'll be considered when they decide whether to pursue or not pursue charges against Rice. Yes, the state can still charge Rice for this incident if they believe charges are necessary based on the police investigation into the incident. The NFL can also still penalize Rice for it, even if he's never charged.
Rice still faces eight felony charges related to the multi-vehicle accident this offseason, on top of several civil lawsuits related to that crash. Many believe he'll receive a multi-game suspension from the NFL as early as this season.
"You still have things related to the auto incident that is going to have to play out here for Rashee Rice," Pelissero continued. "Then on top of that, NFL discipline. But at least for now, back with the Chiefs."
Rice is back with the Chiefs in Kansas City for OTAs as they begin on Monday, May 20.
