The Kansas City Chiefs kicked off Phase III of the offseason workout program on Monday, May 20, and one key player is set to be present and participating in the voluntary workouts after a tumultuous offseason.
Chiefs HC Andy Reid revealed in April when Phase I of the offseason program began that the team would evaluate the status of WR Rashee Rice, "day-by-day here as we go.” Rice did participate in Phase I of the offseason program for Kansas City, which was held virtually via Zoom.
ESPN's Adam Schefter confirmed that the 24-year-old will be present as the Chiefs move into the final phase of the offseason workout program and begin OTA workouts on Monday.
Rice is facing eight felony charges after being involved in a multi-vehicle crash in the Dallas area in March. He's also suspected of being involved in another incident at a Dallas area nightclub, but there have been no charges there yet.
Rice is expected to eventually receive a lengthy suspension from the NFL, but that hasn't happened yet. The timing of when that might happen is currently unknown, but once he is suspended, he will still be allowed to participate in offseason work with his teammates including OTAs, mandatory minicamp, training camp and the preseason. For instance, Chiefs DE Charles Omenihu participated all offseason after being issued a six-game suspension last year.
Regarding the timing of a potential suspension for Rice, here are NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's comments from late April:
“First, we allow the legal process to move through. We obviously are following it closely and as soon as they are done with the process we will be engaged and be prepared to look at all of that under our personal conduct policy.”
Rice was recently spotted training with fellow wide receiver Hollywood Brown.
