The Kansas City Chiefs did a great job drafting this past offseason, and it is already showing early in the 2022 season. While some of the rookies haven't gotten to show their skills due to injury like Trent McDuffie, others are making strides.
We have seen Jaylen Watson, the seventh-round cornerback for the Chiefs has already made a game-winning play when he had a 99-yard pick-six against the Chargers.
Skyy Moore is producing when he is touching the ball, and George Karlaftis is showing that he has the potential to be one of the league's best pass rushers. I think the Chiefs are not the only ones that know that either, as the Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels was asked about him recently.
"Obviously, we evaluated him in the draft too," McDaniels told reporters. "Got great motor, great effort, you know he is not a guy that has just one pass-rush move, you know plays physical in the running game. Just, he is an aggressive defensive player, is what he is. Very versatile. You are going to have to play the play to its completion against him.
"You can say that about a lot of their defensive lineman. Coach [Steve] Spagnuolo does a great job of getting those guys ready to go. He is really starting to come on, and we are aware of him, and we will know where he is going to be, and we are going to have to do a good job of blocking him all night."
Not only was McDaniels showing respect to one of the Chiefs' best young players, but he was also showing respect to the Chief's defense as a whole, and the job that Spagnuolo has done.
This defense is definitely improved from what we are used to seeing. They have shown that they can come up clutch when they need to. Whether it be the 99-yard pick-six, or they would have been fourth down sack by Chris Jones in the Colts game, even though it ultimately didn't count, this team is doing what they need to on that side of the ball.
The defense has always been the weakness of this team. Maybe not always, but definitely the majority of the time that Mahomes has been there.
Now, the defense is showing that they alone can win games, and Karlaftis will be a part of that in the future.
