Chiefs release preseason standout from 1 year ago, which potentially signals a small change within their offense
K.C. is parting ways with Carson Steele.
The Kansas City Chiefs are working diligently to get their roster down to 53 players, and among the notable names they are parting ways with is fullback/half back Carson Steele.
Steele was one of the standouts for the Chiefs during last year’s preseason, which was highlighted by this powerful touchdown run.
That earned him a roster spot, and he appeared in all 17 games for K.C. in 2024. When starting RB Isiah Pacheco went down in Week 2, Steele was the starter in his place the following two weeks. However, Kareem Hunt quickly took over that role when he was acquired.
Steele then moved into more of a fullback role within the offense. He also played 137 snaps on special teams, including five kickoff returns for a solid 26.7 yard average. Steele finished the season with 56 carries for 183 yards, as well as seven receptions for 26 yards.
Steele signed with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent following the 2024 NFL Draft. He had a very productive collegiate career, racking up 3,232 rushing yards and 26 touchdowns during his time at Ball State and UCLA.
Steele was firmly behind Pacheco, Hunt, Elijah Mitchell, and rookie Brashard Smith all throughout training camp and preseason. Steele’s path to the roster was going to be as a FB and special teams contributor, but his release could signal that the Chiefs don’t plan to utilize a FB as much this season as they have in previously.
K.C. has guys with the versatility to occasionally line up at FB if needed, such as tight ends Noah Gray and Jared Wiley. The Chiefs could sign Steele to the practice squad if he clears waivers, but he’ll likely have interest from other teams.
