The Kansas City Chiefs parted ways with former 2022 trade acquisition, WR Kadarius Toney, during 53-man roster cuts.
They'd do the trade with the New York Giants over again in a heartbeat according to Chiefs GM Brett Veach, but it didn't work out long-term in Kansas City because Toney just wasn't able to stay healthy and on the field. Toney wasn't claimed on waivers and it has been all quiet following roster cuts up until now.
According to multiple reports, Toney took a team visit with the Seattle Seahawks on Tuesday. It's his first known visit since being released by the Chiefs.
The former first-round draft pick out of the University of Florida is far too talented to not receive another opportunity in the NFL. His production might not be elite with just 82 receptions for 760 yards and three touchdowns in 32 games across three seasons. At the same time, there is little denying that he's electric with the ball in his hands on offense and special teams.
Everyone in Kansas City should be rooting for his next opportunity to come sooner rather than later. . .
Here's why the Chiefs should be begging for Toney to latch on with any team ahead of Week 1
So why would Kansas City be rooting for their former player to sign with another team? Obviously, they wish him well in his next endeavor, but this is about something more than wanting to see a former player succeed.
It's all about finances. If Toney were to sign with a new team on their 53-man roster ahead of Week 1, over $1 million of the $2.5 million in guaranteed money that the Chiefs owe Toney would then be assumed by that new team. Basically, if the Seahawks were to add Toney to the 53-man roster ahead of Sunday, they'd guarantee what would be a minimum salary for Toney. That amount would cancel out a portion of what the Chiefs currently owe him.
That extra $1 million could prove to be the difference as the Chiefs look to get a long-term contract extension done with players like RG Trey Smith and LB Nick Bolton, who are set to enter the final years of their contracts in 2024.

The Kansas City Chiefs officially have a complete 53-man roster and a complete 16-man practice squad.
