The Kansas City Chiefs have completed their roster cuts and assembled their first iteration of the 53-man roster, but changes are sure to be made in the coming days.
It's likely that some players will be placed on injured reserve for a short-term stay, opening up spots on the 53-man roster. That'll present the opportunity for the team to sign a vested veteran or make a waiver claim on Wednesday afternoon.
As winners of Super Bowl LVII, the Chiefs have the worst waiver claim priority in the league. 31 other NFL clubs would have to pass on a waived player for them to get an opportunity in Kansas City. Claims are unlikely, but not entirely out of the realm of possibility. It's also possible that waived players aren't claimed and the Chiefs can add them organically (on the 53-man roster or practice squad) after the waiver claim period expires.
After scouring all the players released and waived on Tuesday, here's a look at four players who would be solid additions for the Chiefs:
DT Sheldon Day
If the Chiefs are looking for a defensive tackle of the pass-rushing variety, this veteran might be right up their alley. Of interior defensive linemen who played 90 or more snaps in the preseason, Day had the highest overall grade at PFF with a 90.6. He recorded a sack, six total pressures, four stops, and a forced fumble. This type of signing could help offset the absence of a player like Chris Jones if he really does intend to hold out. Day is vested, so he doesn't need to clear waivers.
DE Raymond Johnson III
An opportunity to steal a player from an AFC rival? Yeah, I'd jump on that, especially given that it's the Bengals. Obviously, the Chiefs are last in the waiver priority, so 31 other teams would have to say no, but there is no harm in submitting a claim here. Johnson had eight pressures during the preseason, including two sacks. He had six stops, a forced fumble, and a batted pass as well. At 6-foot-3 and 264 pounds, he could definitely beef up the back end of the team's edge rusher depth chart.
TE Gerrit Prince
Prince attended the Chiefs' local pro day in 2022. A Shawnee Mission Northwest alumnus, Prince is listed at 6-4 and 241 pounds. He boasts the versatility to line up in-line and flex out wide as a receiver. He spent the entire 2022 NFL season on the practice squad with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Working under Doug Pederson could help him get up to speed quickly in Kansas City.
CB Michael Ojemudia
It's hard to get a grasp on the Chiefs' cornerback situation. L'Jarius Sneed hasn't practiced or played throughout training camp and the preseason. Nic Jones has a hand injury that won't require surgery. It feels like K.C. could use an addition here and this former Iowa Hawkeye could help. In over 100 defensive snaps this preseason, Ojemudia was targeted just nine times and surrendered three receptions for 29 yards per PFF.
