It appears as if Kansas City Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt will make his 2024 NFL season debut against the Los Angeles Chargers.

According to the NFL's personnel notice for Tuesday, the Chiefs have officially signed RB Kareem Hunt to the 53-man roster. This comes just a week after the former third-round draft pick by Kansas City was signed to the practice squad. Chiefs HC Andy Reid deemed on Friday that Hunt was not ready to play in Week 3 against the Falcons and it turns out they didn't need him. Now, they'll have a three-headed monster at running back with Carson Steele, Samaje Perine, and Hunt in the mix.

Hunt last played for the Cleveland Browns in 2023, a season in which he carried the ball 135 times for 411 yards and nine touchdowns. The Chiefs hope he'll look a little more explosive this year after offseason surgery to repair a core muscle injury that he played with all year in Cleveland.

What will Hunt's role look like in his first game back? That remains to be seen. However, in three games against the Los Angeles Chargers when he was with the Chiefs, Hunt had 57 carries for 376 yards and two rushing touchdowns. He also added eight catches for 62 yards and a receiving touchdown.

The Chiefs DID make a corresponding roster move

The Chiefs had a free space on the 53-man roster, but the Chiefs elected to release RB Keaontay Ingram in a corresponding move. It's a bit of a surprise as Ingram had just signed to the 53-man roster from the practice squad last Wednesday. He also had a nice game on special teams against the Falcons. Ingram will likely re-sign with the practice squad should he clear waivers.

What are the Chiefs saving their free roster spot for? Well, beginning on Monday, Sept. 30, Kansas City can open up the practice window for players like Charles Omenihu, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, and BJ Thompson. That's something to keep an eye on after the Week 4 game against the Chargers concludes.
