The Kansas City Chiefs were set to be shorthanded on the offensive side of the ball against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 12. As a result, they've exhausted their two allotted practice squad call-ups for the week.
Mecole Hardman and Jerick McKinnon were ruled out of the game on Friday by Chiefs HC Andy Reid. Kadarius Toney followed suit as he was ruled out by the team on Saturday with a newly reported hip injury.
With Hardman heading to injured reserve and Toney's injury being somewhat of a mystery, the Chiefs chose to bring up Montrell Washington from the practice squad. He'll add special teams value after having appeared as the team's punt and kick returner for four games earlier this season. He has nine total returns for over 80 yards on the season.
The Chiefs also replaced McKinnon by calling up RB La'Mical Perine from the practice squad. This is the third and final practice squad elevation for Perine this season. If he's elevated again, Kansas City would risk losing him on waivers. Perine saw one carry for one yard and a single target in the Week 9 game against the Miami Dolphins in Germany.
Ruling out a wide receiver late in the week doesn't exactly feel like a good sign heading into Week 12. This unit continues to seek consistency and changes this late into the game plan only disrupt that goal. Hopefully, players like Richie James (who is expected to make his post-IR debut) and Washington make the most of their opportunities against a Raiders team that has looked a lot different under the leadership of interim HC Antonio Pierce.
