The Kansas City Chiefs got a player who may be able to do multiple things at multiple positions.
The Chiefs didn't have a huge need at defensive back, but they drafted two anyways, just to be sure. I mean, they are so good at developing and finding hidden talents at the position anyway, why not? Last season they took two defensive backs on day three of the draft and they turned out to be starters and make huge plays en route to the Super Bowl.
Those guys are now going to be cornerstone pieces to the defense, along with Trent McDuffie, the first round pick defensive back from last year. They took two guys to have a backup plan in case L'Jarius Sneed leaves next year, along with other reasons too, obviously.
The Chiefs took Chamarri Conner in the fourth round on day three and Nic Jones in the seventh round. They could be something, especially when you factor in where it is they got drafted. Or, they could be guys that never really do a whole lot in their careers.
As sad as it is, that happens a lot. But what we do know is that one of them is extremely versatile. Conner has the ability to play in a few different ways doing a few different things. The Chiefs grabbed a very versatile guy according to one Chiefs area scout.
"He was asked to do a lot of things at Virginia Tech," Anthony McGee said. "He will play any position you need him to in the back end. I just love the way he plays."
The Chiefs lost Chris Lammons, one of their best special teams guys, and a few others too, so getting a great special teams guy wouldn't be a terrible thing. Going back to the L'Jarius Sneed point – even if Sneed does come back, Mike Edwards is only on a one year deal, if they decide to not bring Edwards back, Conner could play safety, as he did in college.
The Chiefs have an eye for talented versatile guys in the later rounds. It will be interesting to watch him and his progress, or even where he stands at training camp.
