The Kansas City Chiefs are bringing practice squad WR Cornell Powell back for the 2024 NFL offseason.

According to the NFL's personnel notice for Wednesday, the Chiefs signed Powell to the 90-man offseason roster. A former fifth-round draft pick out of Clemson in the 2021 NFL draft, Powell has never made the 53-man roster in his three seasons with the team.

The move was first reported by KPRC2's Aaron Wilson.

The 26-year-old Powell put forth perhaps his best effort toward making the 53-man roster this past year, but the team had a logjam at wide receiver entering the 2023 NFL season. He caught six receptions for 63 yards and a touchdown in the preseason, not dropping a single pass thrown his way.

There might be some sense that if Powell was unable to beat out any of the players on the 53-man roster this past season, there's no use in keeping him around. The pushback is that he already has three years on the practice squad and in the system. He's been a valuable asset on the scout team and also from a depth perspective for Kansas City.

With wide receiver expected to be a huge focus for the Chiefs this offseason, Powell will have to put his best foot forward and prove that he belongs if he's to stick around beyond the upcoming offseason. This move will bring the 90-man offseason roster up to 53 total players.
