The Kansas City Chiefs did make some moves on the day of the 2025 NFL trade deadline, but not the kind fans were hoping for.

According to the NFL’s personnel notice for Tuesday, Nov. 4, the Chiefs have re-signed DE Malik Herring to the practice squad. He’ll hold one of the six allotted veteran spots on the practice squad for Kansas City. In a corresponding move, the Chiefs terminated the practice squad contract of rookie WR Jimmy Holiday.

Chiefs DE Malik Herring returns at the cost of a promising young receiver

The Chiefs released Herring from the 53-man roster just last week to make room for the return of DT Mike Pennel. An undrafted free agent out of the University of Georgia in 2021, Herring has spent five seasons with Kansas City.

He has appeared in 28 games with one start during that span, recording 28 total tackles, three tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, one fumble recovery, one forced fumble, and one pass batted. He has appeared in two games so far in 2025 but has recorded no stats. Expect him to be the player to get called up if the Chiefs have an injury at the edge rusher position down the stretch.

Chiefs’ updated 2025 practice squad

  • WR Jason Brownlee
  • LB Cole Christiansen
  • DE Ethan Downs
  • S Mike Edwards
  • RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire
  • DE Malik Herring
  • OT Chu Godrick
  • OL C.J. Hanson
  • DT Brodric Martin
  • QB Chris Oladokun
  • DT Zacch Pickens
  • OL Esa Pole
  • CB Melvin Smith
  • DE Tyreke Smith
  • FB Carson Steele
  • DT Marlon Tuipulotu
  • TE Tre Watson

The corresponding move was to release Holiday, who was a standout during training camp and the preseason. With seven receivers on the 53-man roster and two on the practice squad, the former Louisiana Tech wideout became expendable.

If he doesn’t catch on with another team, I could see Holiday back in Kansas City in the future. It’d be unfortunate if the Chiefs didn’t get a chance to develop him further after what he showed as a receiver and a special teams contributor.
