Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub is starting to ask all the right questions as playoff chances continue to dwindle
Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub kept it real.
Usually, the Kansas City Chiefs are pretty good, or at least league average, on special teams. This year, they have not been good. Last season, special teams was literally the reason they won most of their one-score games, whether it was a blocked field goal, a game-winning field goal, or an elite punt to put the opponent in terrible field position.
This season, those types of plays feel scarce. Special teams can be a reason your team is good or bad, or has a winning or losing record. Special teams can be the line thing that makes or breaks your team, especially if you play a ton of close games. The Chiefs are living proof.
“Does that mean we’re sh****,” special teams coordinator Dave Toub said earlier in the week. “Is that what’s going on? You guys know I’m going to say what I think. We are not as good. We are not making as many plays as we were this time last year at critical times on teams and special teams. That’s kind of frustrating.”
Chiefs aren’t performing well on special teams, but young players are getting better
There are only four games left this season, where the Chiefs have to play the Los Angeles Chargers, the Tennessee Titans, the Denver Broncos, and the Las Vegas Raiders. They could win out and make the postseason. They could win out and not make the postseason. Or, they could not win another game for the rest of the season.
If they did make it, the special teams would have to be on point if they want a chance at getting past the first round. When you get to the playoffs, that’s when every single aspect of your team is magnified and matters even more.
If they don’t make it, at least the young guys got a chance to get better.
“I’m happy with our young guys and the way they have developed,” Toub said. “They are improving every day, and that’s what I tell them — get better every day and the plays will come. Keep playing hard. You have to believe, and you have to keep believing.”
This team is going to get better this season, no matter what happens. It may not feel like it now, but the Chiefs will be better off because of what’s happening. They will learn a lot, so they should spend more time on certain things and more money on others. The young guys getting these opportunities will only help, too.
However, I think most fans would agree that this team would be better off getting their crap together and making a run at the Super Bowl. If they want to do that, defense, offense, and special teams all have to get better. The only issue is, they’re running out of time.
