The Kansas City Chiefs are getting one of their key pieces on the defensive side of the ball back at practice on Friday.
According to a report from FOX Sports NFL Insider Jordan Schultz, the Chiefs are designating CB Jaylen Watson to return to practice. This will open his 21-day practice window, meaning Kansas City will have until Friday, Jan. 24, to activate Watson to the 53-man roster from injured reserve. Watson has been on the reserve list since Week 8, dealing with a broken fibula at his ankle suffered in Week 7's win over the San Francisco 49ers.
Chiefs HC Andy Reid spoke about the potential of Watson returning on Monday.
"There's a chance with Mecole (Hardman) and potentially (Jaylen) Watson," Reid said. "I mean, potentially, you know, that would be stretching it, the whole thing."
Hardman returned to practice earlier this week. Watson will get just over two weeks of practice before Kansas City's divisional playoff game, which should be more than enough time to evaluate his condition. If he doesn't play in the divisional round, he must be activated shortly before the AFC Championship Game (should K.C. advance to it) to return from IR this season. There's reason to believe that Watson could play as early as the divisional round, though. He resumed running in early December and has been hard at work in his rehab and recovery.
Watson was playing at an All-Pro level before he suffered his injury, recording 32 total tackles, six passes defended, and an interception in six games started opposite another lockdown corner in Trent McDuffie. If he can even return to 80% of what he was before his injury, it'd be a major boost to a defensive secondary that has struggled to find the right combination of players since Watson went on injured reserve.
