The Kansas City Chiefs made a move this offseason to bring in safety Mike Edwards. Edwards has played in 58 games for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers over the last four seasons. Last year he finished with 82 tackles and two interceptions, with a pick-six. However, it would seem that development in training camp is making Bryan Cook one of the best safeties on the team.
The Chiefs ran some three safety sets last season with Cook, Juan Thornhill, and Justin Reid. Whether it's big dime or big nickel, they like to have three safeties on the field, and we know that Steve Spagnuolo, the defensive coordinator, likes to use multiple defensive backs in many different areas on defense.
Instead of being that third safety in the field, or the guy that doesn't get to play as much as the other two, Cook is looking to take on a new role in 2023.
Chiefs DC thinks Cook is the 'quarterback' on defense
The Chiefs' defense could be really good in 2023. A big reason why is the development of Cook.
"Bryan's really going to become the quarterback of the defense," Spagnuolo said to the media. "And then (linebacker) Nick (Bolton), but especially the quarterback of the back end. One good thing about Bryan is that he's always looking for feedback. Like he came in the other day wanting to do some more drills. We saw that when we were looking at him out of Cincinnati. He's a worker. He loves football, passionate about football, and we're banking on him in that regard."
Cook was already pretty good last season; look at the AFC Championship game when Cook batted down a pass that turned into an interception. Now, after a full year, his second straight season in this defense, and being put into a new role, I think we can see Cook be a huge player in this defense.
Chiefs safety Bryan Cook could be on his way to doing big things
The Kansas City Chiefs sophomore safety is in for a big second season if what one of his teammates is saying is true.
