Kansas City Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo is finally getting his flowers, being recognized as one of the best NFL assistant coaches in the history of the game.
On Tuesday, the Pro Football Writers of America announced that Spagnuolo is one of two recipients of the 2024 Dr. Z Award. He earned the defensive award, while Titans OC Bill Callahan earned the offensive award. The PFWA gives out The Dr. Z Award annually, recognizing lifetime achievement as an assistant coach in the NFL. This is the tenth season that the PFWA has bestowed coaches with this honor, with membership voting each year. The award is named for the legendary Dr. Paul Zimmerman, one of the greatest football writers of our time, covering the NFL for 29 years at Sports Illustrated.
Steve Spagnuolo recognized for monumental achievements
2024 will mark Steve Spagnuolo's sixth season as the defensive coordinator with the Chiefs after originally joining the team in 2019 following Bob Sutton's departure. What the 64-year-old has accomplished in just five seasons in Kansas City is more than some coaches achieve in a lifetime. He's also one of the most decorated defensive coordinators in NFL history with over two decades spent coaching the league.
Spags has coached in the NFL since 1999 and has coached in six career Super Bowls, boasting wins in Super Bowl XLII, LIV, LVII, and LVIII. With the Chiefs' win in Super Bowl LIV, Spagnuolo became the only coordinator in NFL history to win a Super Bowl with two different organizations (XLII with the New York Giants). After the most recent win in Super Bowl LVIII, Spagnuolo became the winningest Super Bowl defensive coordinator of all time. No other defensive coordinator has won four Super Bowl titles in their career.
Just last season, his defense uplifted a Chiefs team that didn't quite have the offensive firepower it was used to having in years past. When the smoke cleared following Super Bowl LVIII, his defensive unit ranked second in both points and yards allowed. This season, his defense will look to help the team achieve their goal of three consecutive Super Bowl titles.
