The Kansas City Chiefs officially brought back a former 2015 NFL draft pick on Monday.
The team signed CB Steven Nelson to their practice squad after he came to town for a successful visit and workout. Nelson was originally a third-round pick by Kansas City in 2015 out of Oregon State. He played four years with the Chiefs before leaving to join the Pittsburgh Steelers in free agency in 2019.
Nelson spent time with the Steelers and Eagles before spending the past two seasons with the Houston Texans, building out a very nice NFL career for himself. On the back of his best season since 2018, Nelson surprisingly walked away from the game. But now, he's back in Kansas City, and he's sporting a new jersey number.
According to the Chiefs' official media roster, Nelson will wear No. 38 during his second stint in Kansas City.
Nelson wore No. 20 with the Chiefs the first time around, but that number is now worn by Justin Reid. He formerly wore the No. 2 jersey at Oregon State, but that number is worn by Joshua Williams. He wore No. 22 (Trent McDuffie) with the Steelers, No. 3 (Retired) with the Eagles, and he wore No. 31 (Nic Jones) and No. 21 (Jaden Hicks) with the Texans.
If you're the superstitious type to believe in good and bad jersey numbers for a particular position, Nelson probably could have done worse. The recent history of jersey No. 38 in the Chiefs' secondary is a good one, if not a sign of an underrated star. Former Chiefs CB L'Jarius Sneed had worn the jersey from 2020 onward before being traded this past offseason. Before that, when Nelson was still a part of the team, the number belonged to S Ron Parker.
It's not a terrible number for running backs in Kansas City, either. Keaontay Ingram has worn the number so far this season, but Chiefs HOFer Kimble Anders and Wendell Hayes both wore that number in the past.
