The Kansas City Chiefs are coming into 2023 with a different mindset than what you would expect the Super Bowl champions to.
The Chiefs just came off one of the more impressive Super Bowl runs in some time. They were impressive because they weren't really dominant throughout the season, but they were consistent. Also impressive because everyone counted them out, and their superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes was hurt.
Somehow they got it done. The Chiefs are now three-time Super Bowl champions and working their way up the ranks of total Super Bowls. Even after their impressive season, their mentality coming into 2023 is slightly different.
"I think it starts with our head man," Valdes-Scantling told reporters during minicamp. "I mean, he's [Andy Reid] the same guy every single day no matter win, lose, draw, Super Bowl, no playoffs, whatever. He's going to be the same person, and the level of standard that he expects us to play at every day is going to stay the same.
"I think that's what makes him the best coach ever to do this thing. And so having a guy like that lead the show every single day and never get too high, never get too low. He's always the same guy standing at practice making sure everything goes right, making sure we finish, and making sure everything is good on our end. You know, I think that's the standard that he holds for us, and it just trickles down to everybody below."
While MVS wasn't on the 2019 Super Bowl team, he, among others, is grasping the fact that they can't go into the next season like they did then. They went into 2020 knowing they were the champions, knowing they were the team to beat, and didn't have to try as hard because things came so easily.
Obviously, it was semi-worked, as they returned to the Super Bowl. But, in that game, we saw exactly why you can't do that. The whole "Run it back" slogan they used in 2020; have you noticed they haven't done that yet?
This year they are coming in with a different mentality, one that is almost like they still have to earn everything. Nothing will be handed to them. To me, this will only have them better prepared for the 2023 season. This will only have the more prepared to do something that hasn't been done since 2005 – repeat as Super Bowl champions.
