The Chiefs will be chasing one unique Tom Brady record in Super Bowl LVII
For the Kansas City Chiefs, it all starts with Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce. By now, you've probably read all there is to read about Super Bowl LVII. You know the match-ups, you know the keys to the game. All of it. But at the end of the day, for the Chiefs offense, it all […]
For the Kansas City Chiefs, it all starts with Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce.
By now, you've probably read all there is to read about Super Bowl LVII. You know the match-ups, you know the keys to the game. All of it. But at the end of the day, for the Chiefs offense, it all comes down to those two names.
We're talking about the best quarterback in the entire NFL and the best tight end in the league. Two guys that defensive coordinators lose sleep over while obsessively drawing up plans to stop them yet fail miserably once it's time to actually play.
In Super Bowl LVII, that will be the Eagles' #1, #2, and #3 priority on defense. Will they bracket (double-coverage, basically) him every snap? Will they have a specific player, perhaps one of the safeties, shadow him wherever he goes?
Putting him on a bracket sounds like a fool-proof answer but then the Chiefs keep Kelce blocking for one play and the defense is suddenly wasting two defensive players while Mahomes fires a deep shot to Marquez Valdes-Scantling versus man coverage on third and long on the opposite side of the field.
This happened against the Bengals two weeks ago ands while it was a simple play, it shows how effective Kelce's presence is even when he doesn't even run a route.
In two playoff games this year, Kelce has caught 21 passes in 25 targets for 176 yards, three touchdowns, and 11 first downs. The Chiefs – in large part thanks to Andy Reid, too – have a remarkable way of getting #87 the ball, regardless of the coverage you decide to play against him.
If Kelce has a big day for the Chiefs on Super Bowl Sunday, not only could he get his second ring, but he could etch his name in history one more time with Mahomes.
The Chiefs are chasing one record belonging to Tom Brady
That's right, the Mahomes-Brady rivalry isn't over just because No. 12 filed his retirement papers this week.
Mahomes has thrown 13 pass touchdowns to Travis Kelce in their postseason careers, per NFL Media Researchers. That's the second most by any QB-receiver duo in NFL history.
- Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski, 15
- Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, 13
- Joe Montana and Jerry Rice, 12
- Brett Favre and Antonio Freeman, 10
Two touchdowns are all that separate one of the best duos in NFL playoff history. That's gotta be doable for Mahomes and Kelce. Heck, we can't even rule out their shot at scoring three times.
One thing is clear though, this is a record that is bound to be broken by these two. Kelce is 33 years old and has shown no signs of slowing down. At some point in the future, they will stand alone as the highest-scoring duo in postseason history.
