This time last year, tight end Jared Wiley was one of the most hyped players at Kansas City Chiefs Training Camp.

However, with what Wiley has been through since, that feels like a very long time ago. Being the No. 3 TE behind Travis Kelce and Noah Gray, he was utilized mostly as a blocker when the 2024 regular season began. In seven games played, Wiley caught just one pass for seven yards.

We’ll never know if he would have eventually became more involved as a pass catcher within the Chiefs’ offense because he tore his ACL during practice in early November, costing him the rest of the season. Wiley has worked hard to come back, but now he finds himself fighting for a roster spot. While speaking to the media following Monday’s practice, Wiley described how suffering the ACL tear was a humbling experience.

“I’m just happy to be back, honestly,” Wiley said. “That was tough to go through. Definitely a humbling experience. But, to be back out here and be able to play the game that I love, it’s been great. Knowing that any snap could be your last for that season, or however long you’ll be out. You get to where you’re feeling pretty good last year, you almost feel like you’ve kind of made it, and something like that happens. It dials you back a little bit.”

Life comes at you fast in the NFL. With the emergence of veteran Robert Tonyan, Wiley appears to be the No. 4 TE for the Chiefs at the moment. While it’s possible that they keep four TEs when they trim the roster down to 53 players later this month, they may also decide to only keep three. If the latter is the case, Wiley could be signed to K.C.’s practice squad, or he’ll be moving on to his second NFL team in as many years.
