The Kansas City Chiefs are breaking out a fan-favorite alternate uniform color combination for their Week 3 game against the Atlanta Falcons.

The Chiefs took to X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday night to tease that they've busted out the white-on-white alternate uniform combination for the first time this season. They'll wear the combination for their first "Sunday Night Football" matchup of the 2024 NFL season.

They wore this color combination twice last season, once in Week 5 against the Minnesota Vikings (27-20 win) and once in Week 13 against the Green Bay Packers (27-19 loss). After the game against the Falcons, the team will have worn this combination seven times during the Patrick Mahomes era (Rams 2018, Raiders 2021, Chargers 2021, Chargers 2022, Vikings 2023, and Packers 2023).

Chiefs' superstitious past with the all-white uniform combination

The history of white-on-white uniforms in the Chiefs' franchise isn't exactly a good one. This was the combination that the team famously wore during their Super Bowl I matchup with the Packers. Former Chiefs HC Hank Stram was a bit superstitious and is said to have banned the white-on-white look from there on out. Kansas City shelved the uniform color combination for 20 years before Marty Schottenheimer brought back the look in 1989. Since 2018, the Chiefs have had a 4-2 record while wearing this color combination.

What are the NFL's rules on alternate uniforms?

According to NFL rules, teams can only wear alternate or throwback uniforms three times in a given season. They expanded their alternate uniform policy this fall to include a third alternate helmet, but that doesn't necessarily apply to the Chiefs. Unlike other teams, they don't have a true throwback helmet or uniform to wear that would require an alternate helmet. They haven't worn their Dallas Texans throwback helmet since the 2009 NFL season, which celebrated the 50th anniversary of the AFL.

With the Chiefs selecting the white-on-white uniform combination for Week 3 vs. the Falcons, they'll have two more opportunities to wear alternate uniforms this year. They typically reserve alternates for prime-time games and will have a chance to wear either white-on-white or red-on-red later this season.
