The Kansas City Chiefs have been blessed to have two of the best tight ends in NFL history.
For the longest time, it looked like no one would be able to catch Pro Football Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez. He has led the franchise in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns for practically two decades. On Sunday, Travis Kelce was finally able to surpass Gonzalez in one of those categories.
Kelce only needed 14 receiving yards against the Miami Dolphins, and that's the exact number that he got. That was enough to give Kelce 10,941 career receiving yards, the most by a player in franchise history. He's still chasing the marks in receptions (45) and touchdowns (three to go), but it won't be long before Kelce holds those records, too.
On Monday, Gonzalez took to the app formerly known as Twitter to recognize the magnitude of Kelce's latest achievement and encourage him to continue.
"Congrats and well earned my friend! Keep it going," Gonzalez wrote.
It didn't take long for Kelce to find the message and respond.
"Tony!! The greatest to ever lace em up!! Appreciate ya more than you know," Kelce exclaimed.
Back in October of 2022, Chiefs Wire's Ed Easton Jr. spoke with Kelce after he entered the top five in NFL history in tight end receiving yards. His comments back then illustrate just how much this milestone means.
"Being on that list and seeing how much further down the road Tony Gonzalez is," Kelce began. "It seems like he’s a lifetime away from me catching him, and I’ve been trying to fill his shoes my entire career. So I still got a long, long way to go before I’m anywhere near him. But it is unbelievable company, and I’m definitely honored to be a part of that.”
It's always a treat to see how much respect Kelce has for those who came before him as he continues to write his own history in the NFL.
