The Kansas City Chiefs just might have a chance to snag the top wide receiver free agent on the market.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver Mike Evans will become a free agent on March 13, and he is indeed expected to hit free agency without a contract in hand from the Bucs according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic.

Per Russini's report, Evans has been in talks with the Bucs but plans to weigh his options in free agency. When speculating Evans' potential next team, Evans has frequently been mocked to sign with the Chiefs, whose top need is arguably at wideout.

Evans would be a perfect fit in Kansas City, a team that lacked competent hands in the receiver room outside of rookie Rashee Rice for much of the 2023 season. Evans would also supply the team with a nice deep threat, something the team lacked in 2023 despite winning the Super Bowl.

The only thing potentially standing in the way of an Evans-Chiefs union is cost. A to Z Sports projects Evans' contract to run at about $75 million over three years, or $25 million per year. The Chiefs are in a healthy salary cap situation right now, but have two pending free agents of their own to sign: defensive tackle Chris Jones and cornerback L'Jarius Sneed.

If the Chiefs sign Evans, they probably wouldn't be able to afford to keep both Jones and Sneed, so an Evans signing would mean choosing him over one of their own. Considering the team's offensive ups and downs in 2023, though, that's a move K.C. might be willing to make.
